Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James H Ryan on December 21, 2013:

Jim Eddins was one of the finest people one could imagine, a man of great intellect, good humor, and dedicated to his Country. We served together in Company D-1 as cadets and later as instructors in the Academic Department at alma mater. One summer, we were detailed to teach military skills to cadets at Camp Buckner. While on that assignment, we would jog out to Buckner together each day and back. Jim was in superb physical condition. The Recondo troops from the 101st Airborne Division took an immediate liking to Jim. Jim and his first wife Bev were fun to be with while all of us were at West Point.

Jim was one of the rare Colonels to receive the Distinguished Service Medal while on active duty, a tribute to his dedication to DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.

After his retirement from the Army, Jim settled in at his beautiful restored farm Red Hill in Albemarle County, Virginia. I was lucky enough to visit him there on occasion and to eat wonderful meals prepared by his wife Ann who is beloved of all who know her.

Farewell, Jim; and may we meet sometime on Fiddler's Green.

Jim Ryan
