Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert Deardorff on May 19, 2009:

Bob made the West Point years look easy. If he ever had a problem, academic, PE or military aptitude, it never showed. We first met at Stewart AFB in the Prep School. He told me of this exotic area he came from: Glendale, Arizona. My normal rejoinder was the comment about rattlesnakes, Gila Monsters and Tarantulas. So after 4 years at West Point, I chose Fort Huachuca, AZ as my first permanent assignment. I told Bob that I was going to check out his story about this wonderland. The long and short of it: He was right. The long range effect has been that my son and daughter grew up in and around Fort Huachuca, both are graduates of the University of Arizona, and as I write this, my son is and has been for about 20 years an architect in Phoenix with a firm that designs state, county and city buildings throughout the Southwest. So in several ways, Bob has a legacy that started at the Prep School. I always enjoyed his relaxed attitude and easy way of talking. He has a permanent spot in my memory.

Rest in peace.
