11/17/2004 My dear Ellen, Through Charlie Johnson and Todd and Sue, I had been tracking John's great fight with his disease. Everyone has remarked on his great heart and courage. He has been a great son of West Point in deed and in example. The loss of a spouse, and of a father, is one of life's events for which one simply can not prepare. And the feeling of loss is one that only time and great memories can ease. Certainly you have those wonderful memories of a life time shared. I wish there was a way that I could be with you on December 1st as you place John at rest in a place you and he have loved above all others. I will be thinking of you and your children on that date.
