Dean Albert Longbottom

West Point, 1955

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carl H. McNair, Jr. on November 24, 2012:

Remember Dean very well, sharp cadet and good friend always, with a kind word for all. Since we served in the same battalion of the First Regimentof the Corps of Cadets, he in H-1 and I in Company E-1, we had many classes together from Plebe math on to senior studies, drilled on the same days, marched in the same battalion formations, fall, winter and spring, and competed against one another in intramural athletic contests across our four years. We also had the opportunity to serve together during our summers at Buckner and on our class trips where company/unit assignments were co-mingled between our academic year regiments.

Since we were not in the same branch, he in Artillery and I in Infantry, during our Army careers, I did not have the opportunity to serve with him therein, but did see him occasionally until his retirement.

Dean's pleasant manner, friendly smile, and willingness to lend a hand will long be remembered among those of us in '55. He has now answered his final roll call, resting forever in honored glory as the "Saints go marching in."

Farewell to my friend, classmate and fellow soldier,

Carl McNair, '55
