Joseph Fraser Vincent

West Point, 1955

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carl H. McNair, Jr. on November 1, 2014:

Few of us will forget Joe Vincent, his precept, his history and legacy of life - an outstanding cadet, athlete and role model for those about him at West Point. His service in our Army, in the Field Artillery, the Army Staff in ODCSRDA, Korea, Vietnam and at the Tank Automotive Command will be long remembered.

However, of all our classmates, Joe was one of the few whose legacy in the Long Grey Line went back more than a century to his Great-Grandfather, John W. Fraser, USMA 1849, an Infantryman serving on the frontier of our young nation. Joe's Great-grandfather was born in Tennessee and appointed to West Point from Mississippi, thus, like Robert E. Lee, USMA 1829, and many graduates with a southern heritage, John Fraser resigned his US Army commission in 1961 and joined the Army of the Confederacy, rising to the rank of Brigadier General.

Joe's father, COL Stewart Tiffany Vincent, USMA 1922, was an infantryman and served for 32 years including duty as Chief of the US Mission in Bogota during Joe's early cadet years. What a legacy, what a heritage that Joe had before his entry into West Point and moving into his own distinguished career. Joe was born in the Philippines, entered West Point from New York, served in Korea and Vietnam, settling in West Chester, Ohio - after extensive travels in his RV.

Finally, nearing the sunset of his life, he was blessed to see his grandson join the Long Grey Line and proudly made the march back from Camp Buckner along with the fourth generation of Frazers/Vincents to close ranks in the Corps of Cadets. Joe left his mark on all with whom he served and we will miss him so, as will has family and descendants yet to come.

The Class of 1955 is proud to have Joe Vincent as "one of our own" who led the way so that others might follow. God bless you Joe - and may you now rest in the Arms of "the Almighty, the great Friend and Master of All". AMEN

Faithfully - Grip Hands,

Carl McNair, '55
