Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tom Horst on November 10, 2009:

I've known Kelly for a long time....we met while in the same New Cadet Company during Beast Barracks in July 1951. We were then assigned to the same Company, G-2, for the next four years. Although we were never roommates, I felt as though Kelly and I were good friends all during those years. I especially remember those occasions when Kelly invited me to spend a weekend at his home in Brooklyn, where his Mom and Dad (Big Sam) made me feel so welcome.

We didn't see each other again until 1967 when Ruth and I were assigned to West Point. Since that time we've been lucky to see both Kelly and Trudy at West Point, in New York, or in Florida. One particularly fond memory for me was generated through Kelly inviting us to the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, GA about 1997, or thereabouts. During that weekend, he took us on a tour of two of his plants near Augusta; the pride he had in the operations there, and the innovations he had developed and installed over the years was very evident. The friendship and respect that the plant work force had for him was heart warming. That was a side of Kelly that I had never seen before.

Kelly's passing will leave a big hole in my life. He used to say that he would be "the last man standing"....he always will be "the last man standing" in my memory.
