LICHTENBERG--Herbert S., USMA 1955, was a founder and the treasurer of the West Point Jewish Chapel Fund. In the mid 1960s, together with his brother Alan, USMA 1951, he formed a group of West Point graduates and nongraduates, Jews and nonJews, who raised the necessary funds and in 1984 completed the construction of the Jewish Chapel at West Point. No Jewish cadet in the last 25 years knew what it was not to have a Jewish chapel at West Point.
He was generous to a fault and supported cadet athletics and all religious programs. The Licthenberg Tennis Center and Class of 1955 Coaches Housing area, as well as the Jewish chapel at West Point, will remain a timeless tribute to his love for his alma mater. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, Herbie was sited by the West Point Association of Graduates in 2006 as a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Military Academy. He will be sorely missed. We mourn our loss. Burial at West Point Cemetery at 2:30pm, Friday, October 30, 2009. West Point Jewish Chapel Fund. Louis Gross, Chairman
