Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James E. Drummond on July 1, 2008:

Of course we all knew Pete Hornbarger. Always smiling, even when the temperature was down in single digits. I think he preferred cold weather. He would come hustling at a fast pace across Central Area from that den for tiny people in South Area, marked M1. I'd see him compete in tennis on the courts in front of library (but I never saw him in the library itself) and we'd always say "Hey" when we passed each other. A friend of all!!!!!

I really got to know Pete in 1962-63 after he had become "Mr. Mass Mutual", and he would travel down from Buffalo to help us with insurance for our growing families. I bought one which my kids haven't collected on yet which has quadrupled its initial face value. They would sure have thanked you one of these days, Pete, if you could have still been with us. I even bought one for my 1-year son ... he's now 47 and I hope he still has it.

In addition to really knowing his chosen civilian business, thereafter, for more than 45 years, I'd get a birthday card and at Christmas, a small desk calendar. And I appreciated them both. You get right down to it, that's the kind of personal interest one wants from their agent.

I saw Pete competing in the "M1 Continuing Tennis Tourney" at Vail, and for the last time, at John Feagin's DG ceremony ... still with a smile on his face and setting a fast pace when he walked.

Rest in Peace and condolences to your family.
