Be Thou At Peace

Posted by THOMAS C. WEST on February 21, 2004:

Al and his lovely wife Kathy lived in the San Jose valley near Moffett Field, California in the 70s. I was out in that area on business and had a free weekend. Our classmate Danny Dugan informed me that Al and Kathy were in the area and suggested I visit. Well I hadn't seen Al since we graduated, didn't know Kathy and wasn't prone to drop in and visit folks anyway. Also Al was, at that time, 100% paralized from something he picked up in Nam. Later I think it turned out to be agent Orange. Anyway Danny urged me to call and visit so I did. As most of us I thought it was going to be a tedius duty visit on a classmate I hadn't seen in a long time. Well it was hardly that. I had the most wonderful visit with Al and his family that Sunday afternoon. Al, though paralized was chipper and moving quite well in his wheel chair and Kathy was the most gracious of of hosts. We chatted and had a wonderful time. And I think I spent the whole afternoon visiting. Al was teaching then in spite of his disability and doing a fine job of it. Well I want to tell you that was the most memorable afternoon I have spent with a classmate and his wonderful family.
Al has passed on now but he leaves a legacy of service to his Nation and his Class.
Be thou at peace old friend.
