Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Amy Castro on September 18, 2010:

Colonel Flynn's daughter and I went to college together at George Washington University. As I was an Air Force ROTC cadet, that gave the colonel and I something in common. He and Mrs. Flynn were always such gracious hosts and kind "substitute parents" for a college girl who didn't have any family in the D.C. area.

Before Mary Ann graduated, Col. Flynn gave me a few of his Air Force items, including a set of his pilot's wings, an F-4 tie tack, and a set of his captains bars, which I used in my pinning ceremony when I became a captain.

I kept those items in my jewelry box long after I got out of the Air Force. Recently, I passed along the tie tack and the wings to a friend's son whose life dream is to go into the Air Force and fly. I made a point of telling him about how I got the items and what a great man Charlie Flynn was.

I think the Colonel would approve!

I did hang on to the captain's bars and think of him every time I see them in my jewelry box. Perhaps if Matt does make it into the Air Force, I'll send him those bars for his pinning ceremony.

Colonel Flynn touched a lot of lives and continues to do so!
