Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ryan Prater on August 22, 2010:

In my eyes, my grandfather could not help but exude a regal air, whenever I encountered him, for he was an immensely honorable man both professionally and personally. He was the quintessential patriarch, and he functioned as an immovable pillar of strength and security for those who depended upon him. My grandfather's successful career in the military endowed him with an iron discipline, which was reflected in his firm disposition; he was an imposing figure, whose presence always commanded unadulterated respect. That respect was deserved, however, for my grandfather guided his family not as a tyrant, but as a benevolent, just king. Below his hardened demeanor, he was an incredibly gentle and loving man, who cared deeply for his friends and family.

Though it pains me deeply that my grandfather has left this world, I am comforted by the belief that he is with me now more than ever. In my heart, soul, and memory, he will continue to exist. I am able to easily envision his warm smile and hear his deep, rhythmic chuckle, two things I would quickly encounter when embracing him after a ten hour car drive from Kentucky. I can smell the soothing aroma of the pipe he characteristically smoked throughout my childhood. I have even been able to identify certain character traits of his that are alive within me. Most importantly, however, his spiritual presence will help to guide me in the future, as I endeavor to be half of the man
that he was during his lifetime. The greatest gift my grandfather gave to me was the example of his life. For that, I love him dearly.
