Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dave Patton on April 21, 2004:

Dave Patton served with George in the 28th United States Infantry Regiment in the late 50's. Dave writes:

George was a quiet spoken, very serious officer, although sometimes we could make him crack up at some jokes. I guess that's what made him such an interesting guy--it was always difficult to read him and then when you thought you had George all figured out and you were ready to break the mold, a new side of him would appear.

We had, in the 28th, the Muddlers Award given each week to the officer(usually junior) who made the biggest goof or screwup. The award was a wooden paddle the the "winner" had to carry around everywhere during the week. I don't recall if George ever "won" the Muddlers Award but I think I knew him well enough to say that had he "won" he would have been extremely embarrassed. In spite of his shy smile I know that his "winning" would have really gnawed at him mercilessly. As you can guess, George didn't like to screw up, nor did he very often!

Well done George....Rest in peace.

Dave
