Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dan Dugan on January 8, 2008:

Bobby Doerr - I met Bob just before we took that short train ride up the Hudson to West Point to begin our 4 year odyssey as Cadets. I forget the circumstances but we hooked up in NYC and went out on the town. I don't know whose idea it was but we picked up a couple of girls that we met in The Big Apple (Bob got the better looking of the two, naturally). Now we weren't Cadets yet but I'm sure that we bragged about heading for WP. We took the subway out to Coney Island to stroll along the Boardwalk and cool off by the sea on that hot July night. Life was very innocent in those days so eventually we bid them goodnight and the two of us went off to the Astor to spend our last night of freedom before heading "up the River" to four years of bondage and servitude. We joked about that evening now and then and Bobby always had a smile and good word for all of us.
