Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Miguel Nieves Jr. on March 16, 2010:

Dick Hargrove, John McDonald and I were roommates for 3 1/2 years and I can honestly say we never had a single disagreement in all that time. We all had a girl back home who we planned to marry after graduation, and we all did.

Dick never wore "stars," but he sure was a star friend if there ever was one in my life. There was nothing he would not do if asked, whether easy or hard to do. Without telling me, during cow year, he wrote my mother to tell her what a great friend I was. How many 20 year old men do something like that? My mother cried on the phone while telling me.

The three of us always called each other "Brother," even when we all last met at Mac's home in Florida in 2003. We took photos which I treasure.

Dick spent all his life in service to our country, in peace and in a war theater, and after retirement teaching young students to love and defend our nation.

For our 50th Reunion I took 12 family members- sons, daughters and grandchildren- and had all of them meet Dick. He loved it.

We now say "so long, be thou at peace" to a real American hero. As is said: "it is not how he died that made him a hero, it is how he lived." We will meet again when we all join the Long Grey Line.

Thanks for your friendship, Brother.
