John Wing married my mother and I, and I was fortunate to have three brothers and a sister and a life of living from Edwards Air Force Base to Tucson to Virginia to Alabama to Germany, Texas, and of course, Ft. Rucker, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. One the things I remember; Dad had been a member of the West Point football team, and had as an assistant coach for a few years, Vince Lombardi. One time I asked Dad what it was like to play for a man who was getting started in his career as a great coach, and he told the story of one time at a practice scrimmage of sorts, Dad had done something, and Ian off-tackle or an end run or some sort of practice.run. Dad told me that Coach Lombardi went up to him, and said "Wing, you're one of the best backs I've ever seen! I thought that was really something, so I asked Dad how that made him feel. Dad looked at me and paused for a brief time, and said "well, I think he told that to everybody"! |
