Be Thou At Peace

Posted by R. C. H. Schmidt on June 21, 2012:

Dave and I had only one encounter: in the ring in plebe boxing class. To say that I was apprehensive is an understatement. Dave was a shot putter on the track and field team. I was a swimmer. My second advised me that Dave wouldn't hit me unless I hit him, so in the first round we just danced. But between rounds the PE instructor advised me that I'd better be more aggressive in the second round. "Or else..." was implied. So I jabbed...once, and got popped in the chops. It could have been worse because Dave used the same muscles that he did on the 16 pound shot. I think we traded a few more, but the decision went naturally to Dave, to whom I was and am forever grateful for his restraint. Thanks, Dave. You were a gentle man.
