HAMPTON - Lt. Col. Don Isbell, 60, died Sunday, Sept. 30, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital. A native of Pensacola, Fla., Mr. Isbell was a Peninsula resident for many years. He was the brother of former Newport News vice mayor Mary Sherwood Holt of Newport News.

Retired from the U.S. Army in 1976 after 21 years of service, Mr. Isbell had been deputy chief of staff, combat development, at Fort Monroe.

Other survivors include his wife, Nell M. Isbell; one daughter, Lori Evans of Hampton; three sons, William J. Isbell of Seaford, Capt. Donald Isbell of West Point, N.Y., and David Isbell of Virginia Beach; two stepsons, Kos Jackson and Keith Jackson, both of Hertford, N.C.; one brother, Charles Isbell of Deltaville; one stepbrother, Dr. Graham Giese of Provincetown, Mass.; five grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home by a U.S. Army chaplain. Burial with military honors will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
