Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Charles Steinman on April 22, 2003:

I did not know Ski well but I will always remember an incident on the
cow trip when Ski and a couple of other of our larger classmates came
to the aid of Don Gransback and myself. The powers that be required
all cadets to wear whites to go into town. There was a navy installation nearby and we all knew the whites would be a negative attention getter. As Don and I were returning to the busses the heckling from the sailors got worse. Finally, Don could not take it any more. He beckoned to the largest of the drunken swabbies to come forward. Don hit him square in the face and the blood started gushing. (I still have the white trousers with the blood stains) I took Don's back just as the other sailors started to encircle us. Ski and the others saw what was about to happen and came running to our defense. Needless to say the crowd dispersed. For that brotherly kindness, and many other things you have done, thank you Ski. Rest in peace while you wait for the rest of us to join you and the others.
