Be Thou At Peace

Report to the class on the Funeral of William Lloyd Welter, Jr.,

Friday, 27 March 2009, in Williamsburg, Virginia

Bill Welter was memorialized and laid to rest at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, Williamsburg, the home church of Bill and Sherry. This beautiful Colonial church was a fitting place for our classmate to be honored. Sherry Welter and other members of Bill's family and circle of friends were accompanied by the following classmates, wives, and daughter:

Carl McNair, Don and Carla Hilbert, Dan and Anne Malone, Dan Troyan and daughter Danielle, Dan Moses, Jack Mcausland, Ted Gay, Bob Deardorff, Jim and Pat Ryan, Don and Mary Andrews, Tommy and Elaine West, John and Ruth Sloan, Dan and Donna Ludwig, Bill and Pat Lucas, Matt and Betty Schepps, John Feagin, Bill McCulla, Don and Carole Buchwald, Chuck Ewing.

Dan Malone was the Local Classmate Assistant, and Anne Malone arranged for the beautiful flower wreath tribute and card from the Class. According to Dan, "You would want to know we received some fine compliments from several of my Williamsburg friends about our class presence for a classmate's funeral. One ... also added we were an impressive group of people."

The candlelit memorial service, which included the rite of Holy Communion, celebrating Bill's life was conducted by The Reverend Mollie Douglas Turner of Bruton Parish Church. The church was packed including the loft and transept balconies. The opening music by the organist were selections from Bach and Vaughan Williams. Hymns were sung by the attendees during the order of worship. The form of service was Rite II of the Book of Common Prayer. Eulogies were spoken by Don Hilbert and Bill's daughter Mary.

Following the service in the church, the Crucifer led the congregation to the burial place on the church grounds where The Reverend Turner conducted rites as the urn containing Bill's remains was lowered into the hallowed ground. A friend spoke of fond memories of Bill. Carl McNair gave a fitting, final tribute on behalf of the Class of '55. The end of the service was the covering of the burial site with earth by family and friends as is an ancient practice inherited from our Hebrew forebears. May it be said, well done, be thou at peace.

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Ryan
