Marie 'Chickie' Hilbert

Marie 'Chickie' Hilbert, 58, a volunteer and a retired Army major general's wife who accompanied her husband on U.S. and foreign assignments, died of cancer Feb. 17 1994 at her home in Washington.

Mrs. Hilbert, a resident of the Washington area for 15 years, was born in Forest Hills, N.Y. She accompanied her husband, Maj. Gen. Donald C. Hilbert, to posts in Great Britain, Japan, Germany and France when he was on active duty. For the last four years, they had lived at the Soldiers' and Airmen's Home in Washington, where he was director. Earlier, he had been commander of the Military District of Washington.

Mrs. Hilbert had been an official hostess at state arrival and wreath ceremonies at the White House and Arlington National Cemetery. She also had been an Arlington Lady, representing the Army chief of staff at Arlington National Cemetery funerals.

She had served on the boards of directors of Knollwood, formerly known as Army Distaff Hall, and the Army Officers' Wives of the Greater Washington Area. She did volunteer work at the Soldiers' and Airmen's Home.

In addition to her husband of 38 years, survivors include five children, Suzanne Hilbert of Arlington, Donald C. Hilbert Jr. of Roswell, Ga., Cathy Cowan of New York, Marianne Hilbert of Kensington and James Hilbert, a student at Seton Hall University in New Jersey; her mother, Marie A. Peterson of Washington; a brother, Robert H. Peterson of Alexandria; a sister, Roberta Culleton of Murray Hill, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
