I was fortunate enough to serve with Sam Gates in two assignments...one very early in our careers when we were assigned to the engineer battalion in the 101th Airborne Division in the 1950's and again at the University of Illinois a few years later. To me, Sam was one of the most intelligent, helpful, good humored and poised persons whose company I've ever enjoyed. People came first and he never seemed to sweat the small stuff. Sam was merciless at the bridge table...but the very soul of compassion and good cheer elsewhere and in all other circumstances. Sam, may you be at peace. Scott |
