Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Marilyn Humm on September 16, 2022:
As his sister-in-law, my memories of Richard are of courtly and kind man, calm, smart, and disciplined and quick to offer assistance to his family and friends. Family members can remember many instances, both large and small, with one viewing his insight and action on her behalf as life altering. As an only child with a somewhat formal mother and a much older military career father, he was especially appreciative of his acquired family and their affection. One day I was at his and my sister's home when the mailman delivered a birthday package for Richard from my mother, his mother-in-law. My sister said, it is not your birthday -- and then we realized that my mother had been sending Richard a birthday present for years on my sister's first husband's birthday, and Richard was too kind to tell her. (We, of course, teased him that he didn't tell her because he liked the attention.)
He was an accomplished man of character, but more, he was a warm and caring human, a calm presence with a twinkle in those blue eyes and a willingness to engage in a world that needs more men with his skills and quiet commitment.
