Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Henry Winfield on May 30, 2004:

Today I attended a Memorial Day ceremony in Gaithersburg, Maryland, which caused me to think back on my brief service as an enlisted man in the Army 1955-1957 which involved no combat. I was sitting next to a man who had fought in the Battle of the Bulge and wore a gold star. I read on the Internet about medals, and about one Captain Versace, a graduate of West Point. That made me think of cadet Spaeni, who managed our instruction in bayonet training at Fort Dix in the summer of 1955. I had a feeling that he cared about us trainees who were in his charge, and that he would become a leader whom I would feel confident to follow in battle.
