Be Thou At Peace

Posted by E. Patrick Gallagher on March 19, 2018:

I deeply believe that I speak for every soldier that ever worked for him that Dick Woods was the very best officer we ever served with. A commander of true integrity, he was the perfect example of an officer worthy of "special trust and confidence"as stated in our certificates of commission. His selfless dedication to his men, his demanding standards of excellence and accountability, and his loyalty and yes love of the soldiers serving under him made him unique. He was the most knowledgeable officer I ever met, with an uncanny ability to quickly analyze, address and solve problems that often eluded subject matter experts. He was a brilliant developer of junior officers, and a role model and mentor unmatched by any of the hundreds of officers (or executives) I have served with in my career both in the military and as a senior corporate executive. I often found myself during difficult or challenging times in my life asking "What would General Woods do?" He had so much integrity that if he had ever asked me to sacrifice my life for an objective, I would have done it without thought or hesitation, I trusted him that much. The Army has lost an incredible leader and role model. Those of us that had the distinct pleasure and honor of working for him will never forget the impact he had on our lives and careers, both in and out of the military. He was a unique, one of a kind officer and mentor that I will miss greatly.
