I met Col. Garvey through his son, Ken. I was immediately struck by the fact that he was in great shape for a man in his elder years. He was simply an impressive man. He was also very kind and welcoming. I didn't know Col. Garvey very long before he was diagnosed with cancer but it hit me as though he were a member of my immediate family. Not knowing if the Colonel was receiving the best care available, I wrote a letter to every well-known USMA graduate asking for their assistance in finding the best care and getting access to that care. Several men responded and two in particular were eager to help: Duke University basketball coach Michael Krzyzewski (class of 1969) and Alex Gorsky (class of 1982), CEO of Johnson & Johnson. Unfortunately, it was determined that Col. Garvey was receiving the best possible care. And even more unfortunately, it was not enough. Colonel, I wish I had known you much longer. What a remarkable man. God's speed! |
