Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Roger C. Ross on December 11, 2007:

Only recently did I learn of Capt. Bortolutti's passing.
I had the great pleasure and honor of serving with Capt. Bortolutti in Okinawa in 1966-1967. As a 19 year old, recent draftee, slightly more than one year from high school, I was blessed by knowing and being influenced by Capt. Bortolutti. He took me under his wing, so to speak. He opened up new and unknown vistas to me. Having limited means in Okinawa, I could not take College Board Exams when I applied to college. I was compelled to take Graduate Record Exams instead. As a lark, he took them with me, just to see how he would do. Let it be said that he did much better than I!! Although I am now forty years removed from out too short time together, I think of him often. I miss his guidance. Despite the great disparity in our rank (I was a mere SP/4) to this day I consider him a mentor and a friend.
