| When George and I entered West Point in the summer of 1952, we both came from the Detroit area. However, we didn't meet until we played Plebe baseball. George was a catcher -- and a pretty fair one. I pitched a little, and our friendship was formed. Over the years that friendship was not diminished, despite sometimes great gaps between contacts as we pursued our separate paths. I always believed George was the rare combination of a fellow who was a class act and was fun to be around. Every time we met again or even renewed contact by mail, I always sensed that warmth and friendship. There's a big empty spot in my heart.... |
