Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lewis Sorley ("Bob") on January 17, 2009:

Dick Johnston and I were Company E-1 mates and classmates. He was then as he always was thereafter, a friendly, nice, decent, quiet man, someone you liked being around. We have a famous (to us) photo on a summer trip which took us to Wright-Patterson AFB, near Dick's home in Springfield, Ohio. We're all out on the front lawn in our white uniforms, looking very young and very happy. Those so portrayed remained friends for a lifetime.

Only last October a 1956 E-1 mini-reunion brought many of us to Tucson for several days of touring, dining, and conversing. Fortunately Dick and Gudrun were there. It was a grand time, very relaxed, low key, and fun for all. If we were going to be with Dick one last time, that was an ideal way to do so.

Our Class of 1956 in Company E-1 started with 26 cadets. We lost six to academics at Plebe Christmas and vowed not to lose another one. Twenty of us graduated. With the loss of Dick Johnston only 13 remain, as Dick follows Bill Keefe, Frank Bonnarens (KIA), Woody Hayne, Morgan Mayson, Porter Medley, and Reid Barrett among our fallen loved ones. We miss them all.
