Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Col (ret) Stuart Herrington on April 10, 2020:

I had the distinct honor to serve as Commander of the 66th MI Brigade's Berlin-based counterintelligence unit (the 766th MI Detachment) at the height of the Cold War, from 1983 to 1986. Our unit was tasked with providing security and counterintelligence support to the Berlin Brigade and the US Command, Berlin. General Griffin was in command of the Berlin Brigade during this time. He was a remarkable, absolutely gifted leader, who went out of his way to make our unit (a "lodger unit" vs. organic to the Brigade), feel welcome in the command. When we captured several Soviet KGB officers who thought they had recruited a Field Station Berlin sergeant, General Griffin was quick to come to our awards ceremony and praise the young agents who had bested the Soviets, exclaiming, "Boy, you don't know how good a feeling it is to me that we got those b.......!" Our hearts go out to his family, including daughter, Molly. Stuart Herrington, Colonel, MI (ret) Stuherr41@gmail.com
