Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Terry Tibbetts on June 2, 2010:

I knew Peter only for the final year of his life, but I considered him a close friend over that time. He assisted me with information about his classmate and football teammate, Don Holleder, for my soon-to-be-completed book about Don. Peter spoke unceasingly about the hours they spent together working on pass patterns, mostly about Don's skill, not his own.

Peter regularly sent e-mails with striking color photographs of majestic scenes of nature, relfecting his own personality, I'm sure.

Peter constantly reflected enthusiasm and vigor, even after his repeated bouts with cancer. When I heard he had been stricken yet again, I called him. With his usual energy he assured me he was fine; his new medical regimen would carry him through. I felt much better when I hung up. Two weeks later, he was gone.

Shortly, a DVD documentary on the life of Don Holleder, produced by the West Point Class of 1956, will be available, and a featured figure talking about Don will be the smiling, vigorous Peter Vann. It's a wonderful way to remember him. I'm thankful I had the opportunity to know him.
