Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mary Alice Ritchlin Bosseler on July 8, 2011:

All of Donald's classmates at Batavia High School are stunned that he would die so suddenly.

He was one of the most outstanding young men to graduate from our high school and all of the signs were were visible in our growing up years. I had the privilege of being a great friend of Don's from grade 1 to grade 12. In retrospect, he always consistently was a true friend--always ready to help with any class activities, sports or programs. He was part of our "gang" and we laughed alot, sang at Cheshire Cheese, and lived at June Roberts' house. We also in early years, played baseball on Union Street and attended Robert Morris School.

Vividly I recall how in the College English Class, Don would write a one paragraph essay and get an A. I would labor over a long essay and not do as well. I was so envious of his grades! Effortlessly Don blended school activities, sports and outstanding grades through BHS.

I bought my first car from Don. One day in 1956, I received a phone call from Don that he wanted to sell his new car and it would be a great deal at West Point. So June Roberts and I went to West Point and it was a lovely white Ford convertible. I do not recall the car he eventually got.. but I do remember how lovely West Point was and how Don loved it there.

Subsequently, it seems like yesterday, that at our last reunion, Don showed his beautiful 50th West Point yearbook and the wonderful pictures of his family. Thus, dear friend, Colonel Donald J. Barlow may you rest in peace. You achieved so many dreams and have so many beautiful heirs who will always remember you with great love.

Our deepest sympathies to everyone,
George and Mary Alice Bosseler
