Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lori Feuerhelm on February 22, 2017:

I did not have the privilege of knowing Richard in his younger years. Richard came in to my life just 3 years ago, as an elderly man that needed some help, because he did not have family close by. During the time I spent with Richard, it was very obvious how important his family was to him. He often talked about how much he missed Pat and Jimmy. And he loved getting phone calls from Cindy and AJ. He told me many times that he needed to make sure AJ was able to go to college.
And he was very proud of his service to our country. Richard was a very kind, gentle, generous man, always thanking me for helping him and wondering if I needed anything. And he loved his treats! I had to keep his room stocked with Diet A&W, peanut clusters and crispy cookies. Everyone who knew Richard, knew that AJ was coming to visit last spring. He was so excited for that visit. My fondest memory of Richard is the happiness that he experienced on May 14, 2016. AJ and I loaded Grandpa up in my little car and drove up the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. We drove to Alma to see his old house, to Buffalo City cemetery to see Pat and then on to Nelson Cheese Factory. Richard was delighted he could treat AJ and I to lunch and ice cream. He had a wonderful day and was so happy. That was the last good day Richard had before he was put on hospice care. And what a good day it was! Now this kind man is enjoying the eternal peace and happiness that he so deserves, with Pat and Jimmy.
