Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gary Evans on February 22, 2017:

When I think of Rich, the first thing word that comes to mind is gentleman. Richard was, each and every time, I met him a consummate gentleman. Even when partially incapacitated, the last time we saw him, he offered Ellen his chair and struggled to get to his feet to make room for her. I remember him first, when he and Patty, my cousin, were dating and he came to Alma with her. They ate dinner at my grandmother's and Richard quickly won her over with his kind manner and sincere compliments. And then to prove it, he responded each time she offered him more food. That was something Rose would never forget.

We saw Pat and Rich once when they were in D.C. and twice when they were in Norfolk. When they moved back to Alma and then to Winona we saw them more frequently. Thanksgiving was a traditional holiday for us to get together, first with Patty's folks, too, then later with just Rich and Pat and then, finally, with Rich alone.

He was the kind of man you don't forget. The kind of man you wished you had spent more time with after it was too late.

Rest in peace, my friend; you have earned the rest and the peace.
