Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John H. Hesterly on February 22, 2020:

In May 1955 I commanded a field artillery battery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Dick Hotchkiss was a corporal in my battery. I told him that he had potential as a leader in the Army and should consider attending West Point or officer candidate school. I assisting in writing a letter to his congressman from California and wrote my letter of recommendation. This occurred on May 20, 1955, and he entered West Point on July 2, 1955. I got him discharged from the Army and my wife and I drove him to the airport in Lawton, Oklahoma, to go to Oakland to settle his affairs before he entered West Point. Three years later, I reported to West Point as an instructor. I was at West Point during his first class year and his graduation and met his parents.
Dick Hotchkiss is one of the proudest moments in my life. I contacted him two years ago on the telephone. I have his picture in my book of memories. I know that he died in 2018. I would love to establish contact with his family and be able to relate my memories of him directly. Please contact me at my email address.
Sincerely, John Hesterly
