Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mary Ellen (Guthrie) Kanne on April 16, 2024:

On Wednesday, April 10th, at 10:54 a.m., we unexpectedly lost a great man, my Dad, Major General (Ret.) John Simpson Guthrie Jr. He had a stellar career and an amazing life, full of good works and adventure. He adored his wife Elaine Guthrie, three kids (Diana, Mary, and Michael) five grandkids (Samantha, Alexandra, Sarah, Garrett, and Erica), and 3.5 great-grandchildren.

I loved and respected my father, even when I was a disagreeable teenager. My dad was pretty strict when we were little, but I do remember, even as a very small child, loving to be the one to make him laugh! I think he's where my humor comes from. He had a laugh like a lion's roar, would even repeat the punchline of jokes just to keep laughing. As adults, he would send us emails with jokes or old Johnny Carson videos just so we could laugh with him. I will miss his sense of humor, his bear hugs, or his interest in every detail of our lives. He just wanted to know us each better and assure we knew how much he loved us. I will miss knowing he's a phone call or a plane flight away.

Dad, I will miss you every day of my life; every time I have a great meal, and when I hold my newborn granddaughter - who I know you were so excited to meet... or when I roar with laughter like a lioness, sharing a joke or a laugh with family and friends. Love You Forever!
