Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ted Herman on April 12, 2023:

Historian Rick Atkinson wrote that Arlington is 'Where Valor Rests'. The Chaplin at the service stated you cannot buy a place in these hallowed grounds, it must be earned. Both statements define Col. Tom Faley, who was laid to rest last week. He was a graduate of West Point, a decorated Vietnam Veteran, a leader in the military and his community, and he was my friend. After 30 years in uniform, and 2 combat tours, he more than earned his place. Watching the members of the Old Guard, was mesmerizing. Their movements were crisp, as with one sole, focused on the task at hand. When the band played and the rifles cracked, it echoed across the hills. Watching as they delivered the utmost care and respect to the veteran and their family moved me to tears. After dozens of services a week and hundreds a year, their precision and care is all the more impressive. It was a moving experience to be a part of, and is something that once seen, is never forgotten. I was humbled to be there to say, Godspeed my friend.
