Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Lilette Daumas-Britsch MD on January 6, 2016:

I was 8 years old (1966) when I met Marcial in Houston, Texas. My father, Emilio Daumas, was from Asuncion as well and I presume knew the family. Marcial was going to A&M, I believe, at that time and would come to our house as his local family away from home in his blue VW bug.

I have to confess he was my first crush and I really looked forward to his visits and never forgot him.

When my family moved to Sao Paulo, we had the opportunity to go to Asuncion often and I got to see Marcial again at age 16 at his ranch. I was not sure he would remember me but he did. I had learned to play the guitar and so got to play and sing with him and my father at that time. It was a special event for me.

Many years later, Marcial came to the Texas Medical Center for a heart valve replacement (I think that was the reason) so I had to see him and so I did. That was also very special though I was married with 2 children, a physician and in my 40's, I think. He was kind as always and seemed genuinely pleased and touched that I came to see him.

I have only fond memories of him and Mercedes and I'm sorry I only found out about his death today.

Rest in peace, Marcial!
