Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Thomas E Anthony on August 20, 2023:

Jim Heldman was two years ahead of me at the Academy and in the Army. We became friends in Kitzingen, Germany.
Jim was a ski enthusiast. He was on the team at West Point and would fly to Chile in our summer so he could ski in their winter. I could not ski and he wanted to teach me. He gave me a pair of his old racing skis, which made it difficult for me to learn with when we went to Kitzbuhel in the winter of 1965.
We were both engaged to young ladies in Kitzingen, my fiancé was an American; his was a German lady. We all spoke German together. Jim and I became roommates in an apartment along the Ringstrasse in Kitzingen while we prepared for marriages and awaited orders to Viet Nam.
Jim was a hero in Viet Nam. His classmates told me of his heroism under fire in Viet Nam for which he was awarded the Silver Star.
We did not meet again until the early '90s when we all lived I California and we drove up from So California to meet him in No California. We reconnected. He died way too soon.
Jim is a hero to his nation.
