Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG R.M. Ong (Ret) on May 23, 2020:

I met Tom during Beast Barracks, when we found ourselves in the same 4th New Cadet Company. After those grueling 2 months -- as we transitioned from civilians to soldiers -- we got separated and got assigned to different Companies; I was in E-2, while Tom ended up in F-2; but we were still neighbors in adjoining barracks and saw each other often -- especially in the same classrooms.

Tom and I also sang together in the Catholic Choir; we were both 1st Tenors, and so sat close to each other in the choir loft.

During our Senior Year, I was not surprised to see that Tom had been designated as the Company Commander of F-2. His leadership skills had been recognized early on. We parted ways after Graduation Day and our paths never crossed again. Tom served his country and I served mine.

Many years later, after my retirement, I learned that Tom had made a career in the military and risen to become a 3-star General. Again, I was not surprised.

And now, my final salute to a nice guy, a great officer and my friend!
