Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG RM Ong (Ret) on May 27, 2022:

Greetings from Manila, Philippines! Memorial Day 2022 here is bright and sunny -- and a good time to remember my West Point classmate, Tom Brendle.

My memories about Tom are quite vivid, because we were in the Swimming Team together -- he swam the Backstroke events during the dual meets and made many points for our Army Team. Outside of the pool, he was one of the noisier members, always with a wisecrack or a story to share with everyone.

Outside of the swimming pool, Tom and I didn't see much of each other, because we belonged to different Regiments -- and our barracks were far from each other.

We parted ways after Graduation Day, and our paths never crossed again, not even in Vietnam. We both had long military careers, he with the US Army, and I with the Philippine Army.

And now, my final salute to an old friend!

Brigadier General Ramon M. Ong (Retired)
