Greetings from Manila, Philippines! Memorial Day 2021 here is bright and sunny -- and a good time to remember my West Point classmate, Olen Earnest. Olen and I belonged to different Regiments, so I never really got to know him well. I do recall him as someone who behaved like a topnotch soldier -- brilliant, poised and a born leader -- from Day One at West Point. I also think that we sang in the Cadet Glee Club together. I was not surprised to see him become a high-ranking Cadet Officer -- a Battalion Commander -- during our Senior year at the Academy. Olen and I parted ways on Graduation Day, and our paths never crossed again. He joined the US Army while I served with the Philippine Army. I do know that we were both in Vietnam at the same time, but somehow, we never did meet over there. He did put in 20 years of service before he retired and then continued as a businessman.
