Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG R.M. Ong (Ret) on November 2, 2021:

Jack and I found ourselves in the same classroom -- many times -- during our 4 years together. I guess one could say that we were in the same academic bracket. So I did get to know him quite well. He was the quiet type; he didn't speak often -- even during class participation -- I detected his slight tendency to stammer occasionally, when called upon to discuss or explain his answers.

He was sometimes teased about being a great-grandnephew of the Confederate President (and West Point graduate) Jefferson Davis, but he took all that ribbing in good stride. He and I were runts too -- and often teased about our short stature as well. In our P.E. classes, we belonged to the same weight bracket, but somehow we never faced each other in the boxing ring or the wrestling mat -- and for that, I like to think that Jack was luckier than I;-)

Jack and I parted ways on Graduation Day and our paths never crossed again; he served his country and I served mine. We were stationed in Vietnam in the same time frame, but somehow, we never met each other.

Many years later, the Computer Age brought our classmates together again. I was delighted to learn that Jack had "volunteered" as the Moderator of our Class Forum. No, I was not surprised; I had known Jack as the helpful type, with his classmates and underclassmen who needed tutoring. His expertise with Information Technology and his capacity for hard work were the ideal tools for the job. He kept us well-informed about the latest developments at West Point; and he never missed a chance to share his conservative opinions on many topics.

Jack was our Forum Moderator for many, many years -- perhaps up to his last few days. We were all shocked to learn that he had suddenly passed away. I know I will miss the guy.

Well done! Be thou at peace!

And now, my final salute to a good friend, a fine classmate and a great West Pointer!
