Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG R.M. Ong (Ret) on May 29, 2023:

Memorial Day 2023 is a good time as any -- to remember my friend Larry Capps.

I hardly knew Larry during our first 3 years at West Point, because we belonged to different Regiments and our barracks were far from each other. But during our Senior Year, his room was one floor below mine -- and so, I got to know him a lot better. After seeing him almost every day, I found him to be a really interesting individual.

Larry was an extremely friendly fellow -- but he was always so busy doing something or other. He seemed to be constantly on the verge of finishing an assigned project -- yes, he was with the Brigade Staff -- and so I felt that every second spent shooting the breeze with me, meant my delaying him in completing his task(s).

In addition to his being a sharp military ma, Larry impressed me with his sharp mind. He had his views on just about every subject -- and discussed them well, even while multi-tasking through his other roles. Plus he had a great sense of humor and an easy smile for everyone.

Larry and I said our good-byes, then parted ways on Graduation Day. He served his country -- as I served mine -- and our paths never crossed again.

Here is my final salute to my barracks-mate! Be thou at peace, amigo!
