John's mother and my Aunt Betty Anthony and were best friends in Ohio, where John and I were born. They were founders and supporters of the John Brown House in Akron. I first met John when we were both on our way to West Point, he to start his plebe year and me to take physical exams in the gym. We both stayed with Aunt Betty, Uncle Mark and cousin Marilyn in Ossining. John, Marilyn and I would take the train down to New York and hang out at the Brass Rail. We were good friends. Uncle Mark and Aunt Betty's home was our sanctuary. The next year I started my Plebe Year and John and I met again in Ossining. He gave me much helpful advice - "Just shut up and say "Yes, Sir!". |
