Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG RM Ong (Ret) on September 2, 2017:

It is with deepest sorrow that I received the news about Charlie Nahlik's passing. And yet, I also rejoice, because now he is in the presence of the Almighty. Charlie finally enjoys the peace and happiness that he so richly deserves.

Charlie and I became friends from the start of Plebe Year. I think we met each other as members of the Catholic Choir and the Cadet Glee Club. That friendship remained steadfast through our 4 years at West Point, through Vietnam (a sentimental meeting in Long Binh) and after retirement when the Internet allowed us to contact each other, plus our Class Reunions.

Charlie and I always had fun together. As Cadets, our barracks were far apart, but somehow, being in separate Cadet Companies did not matter. We still saw each other, at least 3 times a week, during Glee Club and Choir rehearsals. During our Concert trips together, we were almost inseparable. Our songs cemented our friendship and our stories made us like brothers. On Graduation Day, Esther and I got married at the West Point Catholic Chapel -- and Charlie was there, as part of the "crossed sabers" ritual.

I knew Charlie almost as a member of my own family. His finely-honed sense of humor, his devil-may-care attitude about life (and academics), his dedication to military service -- all these qualities made him special in my list of friends. I knew about his close-knit family, his lifetime crush on Carole, his love of the outdoors (and addiction to skiing) and finally, his determination to fight his illness -- every step of the way.

I shall miss this guy -- but I know that we will meet again -- and sing together again. But remember, amigo mio, your 2nd Tenor voice will always be the accompaniment to my 1st Tenor melodies! "Cantate Domino canticum novum (Sing to the Lord a new song)"

And now, my final salute to a great guy. Well done! Be thou at peace!
