Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG RM Ong (Ret) on June 3, 2015:

Ed and I became fast friends as soon as we met each other, howdied and shook. We never missed an opportunity to chat, even if we belonged to different Cadet Companies. I knew from the very beginning that he wanted to become a Special Forces man -- to wear that Green Beret -- and that he would never stop until he realized his goal.

Ed invited me and my girl friend to visit his home in Staten Island, where his Dad, Ed Sr. (USMA '32) was the Post Commander. Daddy Rowan told us that Esther was the prettiest girl he had ever seen and ordered Junior and me to make sure that I shouldn't lose her. All I could say was, "Yes, Sir!"

Ed volunteered to be among those who "crossed sabers" over Esther and me, when we exited the West Point Catholic Chapel on Graduation Day, 5 June 1963. Ed even drove us to New York City after the Reception and Dinner to begin our honeymoon. We had lots of baggage, including a footlocker, but Ed didn't mind -- he had plenty of space in his VW Microbus!

That evening was the last time I saw Ed. He served his country and I served mine. We missed each other in Vietnam, but managed to reconnect after our retirements. He told me that he had finally earned his Special Forces Tab -- and was delighted to learn that I had one too.

And now, here's my final salute to a fellow paratrooper! So long, Ed! The next time we meet -- in that great Marshaling Area in the sky -- we shall do 10 push-ups together!

P.S. Uh, Ed, when you meet your Dad, kindly tell him that Esther and I celebrate our 52nd Wedding Anniversary tomorrow, OK? Thanks.
