Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Holochwost on July 13, 2001:

Captain Szekely was my Company Commander at the time of his death in South Vietnam. Company A, 1/5th Mechanized Infantry. Our home base in Vietnam was Cu Chu, but in September 1968 we were based at Dau Tieng which had been the central town surrounded by the Ben Cui and Michelin rubber plantations.
Our primary mission at the time was to keep the road between Dau Tieng and Tay Ninh secure for convoys to pass. Each day began with engineers sweeping the roads as we provided protection, then we would secure the road during the day and finally at night we set up company size defensive positions along the road.
Captain Szekely was killed during an assault of our position on the night of September 11, 1968. His RTO and FO died at his side.
His years at West Point were very special to him and his sense of duty to carry out every mission he was assigned never waivered.
