Moose was Moose--I never heard his friends call him anything but Moose--he liked being called Moose.
I was introduced to Moose at WP through Hockey. Moose was a big hockey fan and attended most of our home games. He was friendly with all of the
Hockey guys to include Greg Olson, Gary Johnson, Dick Peterson, Wayne Wheeler, Mike Buckley, Norm anderson and Neil Mieras from '64 and more players from the other classes. They were all very fond of Moose and valued his loyalty to the hockey team. He trudged up to Smith rink during the coldest months at WP and endured the frigid temperatures inside the rink--this discouraged many fans but not Moose--he was a true hockey fan.
Moose and I served in RVN with the 2/503, 173d Abn during most of 1966. We were both LT's and went on numerous combat operations and made two parachute jumps in RVN. We always managed to get together when we returned from the field. Moose was a gregarious, fun loving guy who loved to socialize with his friends. He also loved to reminiss about the good times and the numerous friends he had at WP. Moose laughed loud and often, and appreciated the good times.
Moose was recognized as an outstanding leader throughout the Battalion. He was a solid Infantry combat leader who never asked his soldiers to do
anything that he wouldn't do. He also was not a complainer--he never complained about difficult conditions, other officers, EM, or anything
else--he focused on the positive and made the best of every situation.
His leadership capabilities were immense and recognized by every officer and enlisted soldier in his unit. Moose was AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY.
Finally, Moose and I were in each others wedding. Moose was not only a true friend but one of the finest people I have ever met. Nancy and I still miss him.
