Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Randy Harris on July 8, 2010:

I opened my e-mail this morning in Kampala to read with sadness of Skip's passing. I haven't seen him since we graduated and these few words and recollections hardly do justice to a life so fully led and lovingly described by Judy in her moving note.

In these days of World Cup frenzy, my thoughts turned to soccer and the wonderful times I enjoyed with Skip and other teammates on the West Point soccer team. The day that comes to mind is November 23, 1963. The team had already gone by bus to Annapolis for the Army-Navy game. Skip and I had contracted mild food poisoning in the mess hall the night before the bus trip and were being flown to Annapolis in the Superintendent's plane to be in time for the game. Midway there the pilot turned around and said to us, "The President has just been shot." A short time later he turned again and said, "The President is dead." We landed, the game was canceled, and the team attended a Catholic Mass in honor of the President at a local church.

So that's how I remember Skip. Always a fierce competitor, a sportsman, a gentleman and a soldier. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his loving family.
