Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Thomas Anthony on July 8, 2014:

Curt and I were plebes together, suffering through that first year in Company K2, the famous "fraternity", that created beer mugs with an invented "Kappa Dos" coat of arms, with which Curt and I would toast generations later. When we all went to different cadet companies, we went down different paths that did not cross again until we both had embarked upon civilian careers and Curt, Lorie -the love of his life - and their baby daughter came to visit in Ohio. After that we stayed in closer contact and when I moved to California, Curt and Lorie offered their home in Thousand Oaks as my refuge during the years of my discontent. In later years Mailyn and I were invited to their home for overnight stays: our first daughter still refers to Lorie as "That nice lady who taught me how to make pasta." Lorie is a culinary artist and Curt was the wine connoisseur, selecting the appropriate California chardonnay from his collection for the occasion and we would then all hit the hot tub. After we both retired, Curt and I continued to meet, splitting the distance between our homes north and south of L.A., for lunch at Gladstone's in Malibu. We met there a last time before my family and I moved to the Philippines a few years ago and I will return one day to sit at our favorite corner table by the window overlooking the sea, and missing Curt's eloquently cantankerous observations of the world at the moment, will raise a glass of fine California chardonnay to toast Curt, Benny Havens, The Corps, and the times that were.
